According to AFP, the new production line will include the ability to produce 35mm ammunition for the Gepard air defense system. Construction of the facility will be completed in January 2023, and ammunition production will begin in June. There is no information on the location of the production yet.
The company said the new line will help “restore the defense capability of the German army and fill the gaps created as a result of supporting Ukraine.” Also, this will make ammunition supply independent from foreign production sites. .
Germany sent Gepard systems and ammunition to Ukraine as part of a weapons package. However, its own ammunition production is limited, and earlier this year Berlin asked Switzerland for permission to send 12,400 Swiss-made rounds to Kyiv. However, Berne refused, stating that allowing the deal would endanger the country’s neutrality.
Recall that earlier German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the allocation of 100 billion euros for the modernization of the army.
