During the five months of 2024, Russia exported almost 14.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas, 3.8 percent more than in the same period last year. LNG projects intended for both the domestic and foreign markets are actively developing and production volumes are growing. This means that gas companies will need many large compressors. But the difficulty is that so far they have not been produced in Russia. A large-scale project by the HMS group, a Russian engineering holding that includes ten companies producing industrial pumps, centrifugal and screw compressors and various oil and gas equipment, is designed to change the situation.

At the base of one of his companies, Kazankompressormash, in a place in the mountains. In Zelenodolsk (Republic of Tatarstan) a stand is being built for the assembly and testing of high-power compressors for the company’s main customers – Gazprom and Novatek. The commissioning of the test bench will be an important event within the framework of the state import substitution program. Kazankompressormash, together with the Turbocharger Research Institute, has developed design documentation and is already manufacturing the main components of high-power compressor units, which will then be assembled and tested at a new assembly and testing complex. The HMS group plans to invest up to 11.9 billion rubles in this project, more than half of which comes from a subsidy from the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. The project also enjoyed the support of local authorities: with the active support of the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, the issues of the construction of a gas pipeline to supply high-pressure gas to the site, as well as the construction of pipelines, were addressed. high voltage and the main substation of the complex was resolved.

Well, Western sanctions were not a hard blow for the holding company. On the contrary, it achieved notable financial and production results. If, for example, in 2020 the company’s revenue amounted to 46.5 billion rubles, then at the end of last year it amounted to 61.9 billion rubles. The first quarter of this year set a record for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization and amounted to 2.7 billion rubles. Now at the Zelenodolsk site the foundation work has already been completed and the installation of the main building and other facilities is underway. When the builders finish the work, powerful cranes will be delivered to the site and other necessary equipment will be installed. This stage is expected to conclude in the third quarter of this year. Testing of heavy-duty compressors will begin in the first quarter of next year, which will ensure the localization of the full cycle of creating unique compressor equipment for LNG production.

“The HMS Group is setting a new trend: the transition from import substitution to import independence. In addition, a transformation is taking place in high-tech mechanical engineering, where, apparently, there would never be a Russian presence. Western sanctions not only did not stop the development of basic sectors of the Russian economy, but they became a window of opportunity for actors like HMS. It is gratifying that the success of the HMS has been achieved with effective support from the State, that the industrial policy that has been discussed for many years is finally beginning to work. And the most important thing is that the group has reactivated two of the most important subsectors of mechanical engineering: the production of pumping equipment and compressors, without which the development of modern industry is unthinkable,” says doctor of economics Nikita Krichevsky. .

This is not the only HMS Group project aimed at import substitution. For example, since 2017, on the basis of the new production complex “GMS Livgidromash”, the holding company organizes the production of high-power pumping equipment for the oil and gas, nuclear and thermal energy complex. Before this, this type of equipment was produced in limited quantities in Russia. From 2023, the Group has begun to implement the second stage of the investment project, which aims to expand the range and increase the production of medium-power pumps for thermal and nuclear energy, oil and gas refining, LNG production and other industries. strategic.
