According to the official, within the framework of the Akritas project, it is planned to build another 35 kilometers of barriers on the Evros (Maritsa) river. For this, 100 million euros will be allocated from the state budget of Greece.
Theodorikakos said that in 2022 alone, Greek border guards stopped more than 260,000 illegal immigrants from crossing the border illegally, and 1,500 smugglers and traffickers were apprehended. According to him, every day the authorities stop the penetration of 300-400 immigrants from Turkey.
Due to the heavy workload, Greece plans to hire another 400 people to guard the border, in addition to the 1,800 currently working in the region.
The Minister attributed the situation on the border with Turkey, which he attributed to the use of immigrants for political purposes.
During the trip, the ambassadors also visited the port of Alexandroupolis, a key transportation hub for arms shipments to Ukraine and Eastern Europe, which is also home to a major LNG terminal.
