Haval Jolion. What is the secret of the Chinese crossover KXan 36 Daily News

anti-crisis car

Formally, Jolion is the initial model of the Chinese brand, playing in the segment of compact B-crossovers (from 1,799,000 rubles). However, thanks to an impressive wheelbase (2700 mm), width (1841 mm), length (4472 mm) and, as a result, a spacious interior, our hero climbed into the next size segment of the C-SUV. For example, with a comparable overall width, the length of the Nissan Qashqai, Skoda Karoq and Peugeot 3008 jumped.

Jolion’s appearance is somewhat pompous and has an oriental flavor, but for many customers these characteristics are a virtue. In any case, the car looks bright and solid. Yes, and in the cabin there is something that attracts attention. The finish for a conventional SUV is, without exaggeration, good, especially in the top-end configuration in which the test car was presented.

Of course, the interior items here are carefully tuned, soft plastic and eco-leather are pleasant to the touch, and a virtual “tidy” and a widescreen 12.3-inch touchscreen are a gadget lover’s dream.

There are, however, nuances. I think that drivers of the older age group are unlikely to like that there are practically no traditional physical buttons in the cabin.

Almost all on-board electronics are controlled by the same touch screen, I must say, with excellent resolution and quick response to pressure. There are only a few main functions here, for example, electronic assistants and driving modes are hidden somewhere deep in the menu. A rare exception is the heated steering wheel: it is turned on by a button on the steering wheel. And if you want to adjust the climate control or turn on the heated seats, then welcome to the depths of “multimedia”.

The ergonomics of the cabin as a whole is well thought out. Perhaps the only annoying bug is the lack of steering column reach adjustment (there is only one tilt adjustment). But in the central tunnel there are many slots for placing smartphones, a couple of cup holders covered with a lid and wireless charging, and under the tunnel there is a second tier with USB connectors.

Be that as it may, sitting in any of the Jolion chairs is comfortable and spacious, despite the fact that the sofa does not move lengthwise, and its split backrest is not tilt-adjustable. It can only be folded on a flat floor and thereby increase the trunk volume from a not too impressive 337 liters to 1133 liters. In the underground there is a “stowaway”, and in the trunk there is a convenient molded recess for a boat with a “washer”.

Taking into account the peculiarities

Engineers have made the Jolion suspension compatible with our roads. The crossover cleverly filters out bumps and potholes of various calibers without annoying jolts. Subjectively, the chassis is tuned here only slightly stiffer than on the Renault Duster or Toyota RAV4. At the same time, the rolls in corners are moderate, and I did not manage to force the shocks to bounce on broken primers.

The top 150-horsepower 1.5-liter gasoline engine can be “watered” with 92-m gasoline, and the dynamics, as I was convinced, do not suffer. The crossover easily keeps up with the pace of city traffic, as well as a cruising speed of 120 km / h on a country highway, and at the same time there is always a margin for a jerk under the right pedal. Such a joy of reactions is greatly facilitated by a 7-speed preselective “robot”. It’s fast enough even in civilian Normal mode, and when you select the Sport preset, it switches “down” even more willingly. True, in the latter case, with active driving, small jerks in the transmission may occur.

Jolion disc brakes are effective, but they act harshly. The steering wheel is quite elastic and light, and most importantly, it is informative. No artificiality or delays in reactions are observed, which is wonderful.

Separately, it must be said about the numerous electronic guides. First of all, it is remarkable that they are on board. In this segment, this is a real treat. Perhaps the most useful of the “bodyguard” suite, the blind spot monitoring system, warns ahead of time of a neighbor along the stream who has slipped in from the side, with sound and light indication. The lane center assist also works well.

As soon as the car begins to move towards the marking line, the electronics will drive it away from the dangerous edge with microsteering, if the driver, of course, has not turned on the “turn signal”. The only bad thing is that this assistant turns on automatically after starting the engine and even opening the door, and then you have to disable it through the menu if you don’t need it. During testing, I had to do this more than once or twice. After all, the tasks for the “autopilot” to take control on icy asphalt and slush were definitely not there.

At the same time, the adaptive cruise control is unreservedly good here, and the surround-view system makes it ideal for parking in a tight yard. All you need is mixing 3D views on the large touch screen. There is also a “parking assistant”, and you can connect your smartphone to the multimedia system and broadcast, for example, the navigation software on the screen.

Vote for the 4×4

The possibility of buying Jolion, including the 4×4 version, is an important advantage of the model. Also, if you often drive, for example, in winter outside the city, take a car with an all-wheel drive transmission. That the fifth-generation Haldex electromagnetic clutch works here not as quickly as on the Volkswagen Tiguan or Skoda Karoq, it is still a great help on “crossings”, especially, as in my case, snowy ones.

Be that as it may, where out-of-town front-wheel drive crossovers skidded helplessly, I drove without a problem. I didn’t even have to activate Snow mode, which is best suited for driving in sleet. The Jolion managed even in Normal mode, engaging the wheel locks and quickly transferring some of the power to the rear wheels.

It remains to say that the all-wheel drive test car in the top Premium configuration will cost 2,519,000 rubles. At the same time, innovative driver assistance systems, front, side and curtain airbags throughout the passenger compartment, heating of all seats, windshield, windshield washer nozzles, exterior mirrors and steering wheel, as well as a 12-inch touch screen, 3 inches. , dual-zone climate control, on-board projector, data on the windshield, surround vision system and much more.

And through the My Haval app, you can start the engine, set the climate control temperature, and turn on the seat heaters. In a word, Jolion is a worthy alternative to the European and Japanese classmates who left our market, which confirms the high demand for this model.
