Earlier, the US edition of the Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous US officials, published material that China would allegedly pay Cuba to host a secret spy base. Such a military base, according to journalists, will allow Beijing to monitor US ships and electronic communications in the southeastern United States.

In response to this publication, Fernández de Cossío affirmed that Cuba rejects the foreign military presence in the entire Latin American region, and also signed the relevant international treaties. He recalled that in 2014 an agreement was signed in Havana that declared Latin America and the Caribbean a zone of peace.

“We reject any foreign military presence in Latin America and the Caribbean, including numerous US military bases, especially the military base located in the illegally occupied part of Cuba’s national territory in Guantánamo province,” said Fernández de Cossio.

According to the diplomat, “the intention of the Wall Street Journal publication is to mislead public opinion about the situation in Cuba and it has no foundation.”

– Such smears are often fabricated by US officials who are apparently familiar with intelligence information. For example, regarding the alleged acoustic attacks on US diplomatic personnel in Cuba, regarding the non-existent Cuban military presence in Venezuela, the Cuban diplomat identified the most egregious examples of lies replicated by the US regarding Havana.

“All these are erroneous concepts spread with the perfidious purpose of justifying the unprecedented intensification of the blockade and the aggressions against Cuba, and to deceive the public opinion of the United States and the world,” said the deputy head of the Cuban Foreign Ministry.

“The hostility of the United States towards Cuba and the extreme and brutal measures that cause humanitarian damage and punish the Cuban people cannot be justified,” the diplomat concluded.
