‘He had a really tragic life’: Paul McCartney on John Lennon

Date: June 22, 2024 Time: 15:40:03

At the Tribeca Festival, British musician Paul McCartney discussed a lot with Conan O’Brien, including the life of John Lennon, the leader of the cult rock band The Beatles. McCartney quotes Deadline.

The conversation took place against the backdrop of McCartney’s 1964 Eyes of the Storm exhibition (and accompanying book), which included 275 previously unpublished photographs taken by the musician between late 1963 and early 1964, when The Beatles became into an international sensation. Until recently, they were considered lost.

“What I love about these photos is the innocence. We didn’t know we would be famous. We really wanted to become them, but we didn’t know it,” the bassist shared.

In one photo, Lennon sits in the back seat of a car wearing thick glasses. When O’Brien commented that the musician looked anxious and vulnerable, McCartney replied, “I don’t know about anxiety, but vulnerability is true.”

“John had a really tragic life,” McCartney said, adding that when he was a child, guardianship authorities deprived his mother of parental rights and that his father left home when Lennon was three.

McCartney said that he “always admired the way he handled everything, because I’m not sure I’ve gotten over everything John went through.”

Paul McCartney previously revealed that artificial intelligence allowed him to create the band’s “latest” song, due for release later this year. We talk about it in more detail here.
