Hiperbaric, to the conquest of America and Asia after the explosion of green hydrogen

Date: March 29, 2024 Time: 03:15:17

“We feel strong and we have the tools to compete in any market”, says the general director of Hiperbaric, Andrés Hernando, proudly. The company from Burgos specializing in the development of high-pressure industrial equipment is experiencing a sweet moment and is making the most of the explosion of ‘green’ hydrogen. Immersed in a strategic plan to multiply its turnover by 2.5 in 2027, reaching 158 million euros, it plans to achieve further international expansion.

Hernando tells La Información that Hiperbaric is preparing to conquer America and Asia once it consolidates its “leadership” in Europe. “In principle, we should make the leap in a couple of years, before the strategic plan is finalized. In North America we already have a strong commercial and after-sales presence, so we will do it organically, relying on our stores. In Asia we still do not have a defined strategy, but we will do so in the coming months,” says the manager, assuring that it is not among the plans to relocate manufacturing and engineering.

In this, it aspires to lead the opportunities that are opening up in the field of green hydrogen compression at high pressure inside and outside Spain and which, a study by the research agency Transparency Market Research, will go from having a market of 2,100 million euros today to 133,580 million in 2031 The agreement establishes that the Spanish company will supply and deliver compressors for several locations of the French company throughout Europe in the next two years.

Green hydrogen, core ‘piece’

In fact, by 2027 it expects green hydrogen to account for 45% of its total turnover. Currently, 90% of its income comes from the high pressure processing (HPP) business for the treatment and preservation of food and beverages, where it holds more than 60% of the international market share and has worked with companies such as Starbucks, Campofr io, Profand, Paltavo or Noel. It also plans to increase the workforce by 78%, to reach 250 workers and allocate between 3 and 4 million euros to improve its facilities. During the term of the strategic plan, the company will also invest 5% of its turnover in R&D.

The route map of the Burgos company, almost 25 years old, is also based on the support of its renewed shareholding structure. At the end of 2022, the company Innvierte Economía Sostenible Sicc Sme, whose sole shareholder is the Center for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI), of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, was incorporated into the capital. Hiperbaric’s founding and management team became the main shareholder with a 55% stake. The new shareholders are 100% Spanish.

On the other hand, the strategic plan establishes the development of a new business unit, HPP Automation System, for the design, manufacture and supply of tailor-made, flexible and personalized solutions, and the automation of all types of food industries that work with high pressure technology. Likewise, the company plans to boost the market penetration of hot isostatic pressing or HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressing) technology to face the challenges of metallic and ceramic additive manufacturing. In 2022, Hiperbaric achieved a record turnover of 63.1 million euros, 16.5% more than the previous year, while the gross operating result (Ebitda) was 21.1 million euros, 30% higher to that of 2021.

Castile and Leon

Hiperbaric, Desmasa, Aciturri and Fundación Caja de Burgos have launched the Castilian and Leonese Hydrogen Association for the promotion of renewable energy and innovation projects and with the goal, by 2030, of installing 1 gigawatt (GW) of electrolysers, which would cover 25% of the current demand for hydrogen in Spain (125,000 tons per year). Also bet on hydrogen as a fuel for mobility and foresee the construction of 16 hydrogen plants, the commissioning of 25 public transport vehicles and between 370 and 550 industrial vehicles powered by hydrogen. Another key will be the regional development of the sustainable fertilizer industry.

H2CYL has been created with around twenty associates, including project developers and renewable energy generators, such as Capital Energy, Grupo Ibereólica, Ansasol and RIC Energy; photovoltaic engineering and installers such as Abasol, knowledge entities such as CTME, CARTIF and CIDAUT, the University of Burgos; electrolyser manufacturers, such as H2GREEM; operators and distributors of renewable gases, such as Redexis; hydrogen producers and marketers, such as Lhyfe; technology companies, such as DGH Technological Solutions; and potential consumers, such as Benteler, Campofrio and Grupo Joanca.
