Hotel prices rise again in the month of February, rising by 7.7% and approaching 106.7 euros on average per room. However, visits to hotel establishments in Spain increased by 10.3% during the second month of the year, according to data from the Hotel Tourism Situation published today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Overnight stays made by travelers residing in Spain grew by 4.1%, and those by non-residents by 14.2%. The British and Germans continue to lead foreign visitors.
In the first months of 2024, overnight stays increased by 8.4% compared to the same period of the previous year. Resident travelers in Spain increased by 1.5% and non-resident travelers by 12.7%. By destination, Andalusia, the Community of Madrid and Catalonia were the main destinations for travelers residing in Spain, with 20.2%, 14% and 12.7% of the total overnight stays, respectively. For foreigners, the favorite destinations were the Canary Islands, Catalonia and Andalusia, with 46.3%, 15.7% and 14% of the total, respectively.
By tourist areas, the Island of Tenerife recorded the highest number of overnight stays, with more than 2.1 million. For their part, the tourist spots with the most overnight stays were Barcelona, Madrid and San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Adeje.
British and German tourists, those who visited Spain the most
On the other hand, travelers from the United Kingdom and Germany accounted for 22.9% and 15.8%, respectively, of the total overnight stays of non-residents in February. Overnight stays by travelers from France, the Netherlands and Italy (the following source markets) represented 6.9%, 4.6% and 4.6% of the total, respectively.
Data from the INE show how 53.1% of the places offered were filled last month, with an annual increase of 3.2%. The occupancy rate by places on the weekend increased by 0.7% and stood at 59.6%. The Canary Islands presented the highest degree of occupancy by places during February (76.2%). By tourist areas, the South of Gran Canaria reached the highest occupancy rate for places (82.2%). It also had the highest weekend occupancy (81.2%). The tourist spot with the highest occupancy rate by places was Mogán (83.1%), which also reached the highest occupancy on the weekend (83.5%).
Hotel of hotels
The Hotel Price Index rose 7.7% in February compared to the same month in 2023, according to data from the statistical institute. This increase is lower than those registered in previous months (7.6% in January, 8.7% in December, 8.6% in November and 9.5% in October). In February last the increase was 11%.
By autonomous communities and cities, the greatest increase was recorded in Aragón (10.9%) and the only decrease in the Foral Community of Navarra (-0.3%). By category, the largest price increase occurred in four gold star establishments (8.6%).
The average billing of hotels for each occupied room (ADR) was 106.7 euros, which represented an increase of 7% compared to the same month in 2023. For its part, the average daily revenue per available room (RevPAR), which is conditioned by the occupancy of these establishments, reached 67.4 euros, with an increase of 11.2%.
The five stars, at an average of 239.3 euros
By category, the average billing was 239.3 euros for five-star hotels, 110.9 euros for four-star hotels and 83.4 euros for three-star hotels. The average income for these same categories was 156.3 euros, 79.4 euros and 53.9 euros, respectively.
The tourist spot with the highest average turnover was Naut Aran, with 233.9 euros, while the municipality of Adeje presented the highest income per available room, 169 euros.
