Iberdrola will supply green energy to the German steel company SHS for 15 years

Iberdrola Deutschland has reached an agreement with the German steel company Stahl Holding Saar (SHS) and has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with a duration of 15 years and covering an annual consumption of 200 GWh.

Iberdrola’s Baltic Eagle that is being built in the Baltic Sea and that will supply, specifically, the offshore wind capacity of about 50 MW, according to what the Spanish electric company has indicated in a statement published by Efe.

With the aim that the German steel company uses clean energy while producing steel, so it will be using less carbon dioxide in the German state of Saarland. Likewise, not only will this alliance be carried out, but new agreements are expected to be created to promote renewable energy and the production of green hydrogen.

The Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm is the second of Iberdrola’s three large projects in Germany. It will come into operation at the end of 2024 and has a total capacity of 476 megawatts, enough to supply green energy to 475,000 homes and avoid 800,000 tons of CO2 per year.

The future of green energy production will be very advanced in less than ten years, according to Iberdrola. Starting in 2030, SHS wants to produce 3.5 million tons, approximately 70% of its steel, with fewer emissions, and by 2045 it aims to achieve as CO2-neutral production as possible.
