At a primary school in China’s Shandong province, the school year began for the first time for 12 pairs of twin boys. They were all assigned to one class.

In total, at the beginning of the school year more than one hundred first grade students attended this school, including five sets of twins and seven sets of girls. Video images of them walking hand in hand to class sparked universal delight and tenderness.

Some of the parents of students who were like two peas in a pod tried to make the teachers’ work easier. “I made name stickers and stuck them on my daughters’ school uniforms. I made the same stickers for backpacks and water bottles,” said one mother of twins, who believes this will help both teachers and classmates distinguish between her daughters.

It is not the first time that a large number of pairs of twins sit at the same time at a desk at this school: in 2020 there were 12 pairs, and in 2021 and 2022, 13 each.

Chinese doctors claim that the incidence of twins in the Middle Kingdom has increased: if it previously represented 0.5% of the total number of births, in recent years it has reached 4%.
