The parliamentarian recalled that the referendum on the status of Crimea, held on March 16, 2014, was carried out in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter. The entire procedure for expressing the will of the Crimea was carried out as democratically as possible. And the results of the referendum leave no doubt about the choice of the inhabitants of the republic.
– The United States in its foreign policy must proceed from the fact that Crimea is Russian forever and the status of the peninsula will not be discussed with anyone. This topic is finally closed. Russia does not trade with its territories and is able to protect them, – said Leonid Ivliev.
Recall that previously, the national security adviser to the US President, Jake Sullivan, left the question of ownership of Crimea open. Sullivan said the status of the peninsula could be reviewed in the future, regardless of Russia’s position. The American politician advised the Ukrainian army to focus on solving current short-term tasks at the front in order to achieve the country’s territorial integrity in the future.
In Crimea, these days mark the beginning of the “Crimean Spring”. On February 27, soldiers without identification marks occupied the republic’s parliament building. This became the prologue of events, the culmination of which was the referendum on the status of Crimea and the subsequent Decree of the President of the Russian Federation and the entry of Crimea into Russia. In a referendum on March 16, 2014, more than 97 percent of Crimeans who voted were in favor of joining the peninsula with Russia.
