“During excavations at the Tell el-Abqayn archaeological site, an Egyptian archaeological mission has discovered several adobe architectural blocks originating from military barracks and weapons and food warehouses from the New Kingdom period,” RIA Novosti reports.
Archaeologists have found a long sword made of bronze with a cartouche (name plate) of Pharaoh Ramses II.
The finds also included fishing gear, personal hygiene products, amulets and two limestone blocks, one of which bore the hieroglyphic inscription of Ramses II’s titles.
As noted by the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, Mohammed Ismail Khaled, the discovery by archaeologists confirms the historical and archaeological importance of El Abqayn Fort, considered one of the deployment points of the Egyptian army in ancient times.
Ramses II the Great is considered one of the most powerful and famous pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. Under his rule, Egypt achieved serious military successes and important territorial conquests.
Let us recall that in the spring, a joint Egyptian-American archaeological mission during excavations in the province of Minya discovered the upper part of a colossal statue of Ramses II. Interestingly, the lower part of this statue was found in 1930 during excavations in the ancient city of Hermopolis.
