In Japan, a mission from the Nara Prefectural Institute of Archaeology, while excavating at Kashihara, unearthed what may be the longest sword ever discovered.

According to Heritage Daily, the unprecedented find was made during excavations at the Tomiomaruyama mound, which dates back to the 4th century AD. The mound with a diameter of 86 meters and a height of 10 meters belongs to the Kofun period (300-538 AD), it is that is, the oldest era in the documented history of Japan.

Previous excavations here have unearthed numerous agricultural tools, household utensils, cylindrical copper and bronze utensils, as well as several mirrors decorated with images of gods and animals.

In the course of new excavations, archaeologists have discovered a giant sword of the “doken” type, a type of bronze sword characteristic of ancient Japan with a rod-shaped handle and a broad blade. A feature of the artifact is its size: according to archaeologists, the length of this sword is 2.3 meters. It’s hard to imagine a person who could handle such a large blade. However, experts suggest that it had a ceremonial purpose to repel evil forces.

The sword is not bronze, but iron, it has a slightly curved blade, similar to a snake. Experts do not see anything surprising in this, since swords of this type were associated with the cult of the god of snakes. Archaeologists note that the sword found is the longest sword ever found intact in Japan.

This find was not the only one that has no analogues. In addition, archaeologists found a bronze mirror made in the shape of a shield on the floor of the mound. Interestingly, it covered a five meter long wooden coffin in the form of a lid. Archaeologists have yet to discover the sarcophagus itself. They believe that its contents remained intact, as there are no signs of looting from the tomb.

Scientists also note that bronze mirrors found at archaeological sites in Japan tend to have a rounded shape. However, the mirror on Tomiomaruyama Mound is shield-shaped and quite large: 64 centimeters high and 31 centimeters wide. It is adorned with patterns typical of “Daryuke” type mirrors of the Kofun period.

According to the researchers, the shield surface of the mirror found is the largest of all known bronze mirrors found in Japan to date. They say the only comparable size is a bronze mirror previously unearthed at the Hirabaru ruins in Fukuoka.
