“The number of people hospitalized after taking dietary supplements has risen to 106 and the government has said it will carry out an emergency review of this type of food product that advertises medicinal properties, which includes around 6,000 products,” the publication notes.
Let us remember that this food supplement was intended to reduce cholesterol levels. People using it began arriving at hospitals in January. Their kidneys were failing and one of them required dialysis.
As soon as this became known, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical decided to recall the entire batch containing red yeast rice from the market. The company suggests that the cause of illness and death in people could be additive components that were not originally included in the composition, but somehow found their way into the final product.
Meanwhile, other Japanese companies that also produce red rice products have already announced product recalls.
