These alarming figures were expressed by the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Yuri Polyakov, speaking to the deputies of the State Assembly of the republic. The speaker recalled that ensuring road safety and reducing deaths from traffic accidents are priority tasks for the State.

– Last year, we managed to implement part of the activities in accordance with the regional project “Red Vial” of the national project BKD. Works on 56 highways and bridges have been completed. The amount of financing for these purposes has increased by 3.6 times. Despite the measures taken, during the registration of a third of the incidents, violations of the mandatory requirements for the operational status of the road network were detected, the minister said. – Deficiencies in winter maintenance were recorded in 22% of the cases of all identified accidents.

The republic has not reached the annual forecast indicators for the reduction of mortality from traffic accidents, established by the federal project “Road Safety”. Thus, it was predicted that the death toll in 2022 would not exceed 108 people.

Police managed to identify and remove more than 1,800 drunk drivers from the roads. Thanks to this, the main indicators of “drunken” accidents have decreased. But still, the cause of every fifth death is drunk driving.

According to a RIA Rating study compiled on the basis of Rosstat data, in 2022 Mordovia ranked 71st among the country’s regions in terms of road quality. 34.6% of the routes of the republic met the regulatory requirements. According to the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Moldova, the poor condition of the roads, the lack of road signs in the necessary places and faulty lighting contribute to the increase in accidents.

“Three quarters of all the dead fall on the roads of the federal level,” emphasized Yuri Polyakov. – Of the 220 fixed photo and video recording complexes, only 145 are working.

The head of the department recalled that by 2024 all measures must be taken in the regions to achieve the target indicators of road deaths. The Republic must guarantee road safety in a timely manner.
