Photos and videos on social media showed huge clouds of black smoke rising from the roof of the building at 125 Greenwich St. Helicopters could also be seen circling the building. Crews from the New York City Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service responded to the scene. Crowds of people gathered at the intersection of Greenwich and Liberty streets to watch smoke rise from the tall building. It could be seen across the river in Brooklyn as a huge black column.
Between 300 and 500 construction workers were in the building when the fire started, but there was no official confirmation of an evacuation, the Daily Express reported. The skyscraper is still under construction. In 2019, it was suspended until 2023, when the developers received a loan of $313 million. Construction is expected to be completed this year.
