According to the WHO, in recent years, the incidence of measles has increased in some countries in Africa and the eastern Mediterranean (Congo, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India). But more alarming for us is the complication of the epidemiological situation with measles in neighboring countries – Ukraine, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, from where the infection also enters Russia.
“Currently, the situation of the measles epidemic in the Russian Federation is under control. At the same time, in some regions, there is an increase in the incidence, mainly due to unvaccinated citizens, labor immigrants who arrived from neighboring countries. Often families who do not recognize vaccinations for religious reasons are also at risk are people who lead a nomadic lifestyle and do not seek medical help,” Rospotrebnadzor explained.
According to WHO data, at the beginning of September 2022, since the beginning of the year, more than 155.5 thousand cases of measles have been registered in the world in 153 countries, and there are also deaths. The main reason for the outbreak of infection, which already seemed to have been defeated, was the massive refusal to carry out routine vaccinations.
Why is measles dangerous?
This is a highly contagious infection, one of the most contagious, transmitted by airborne droplets. Infectologists say that one only has to walk down the hall or enter the elevator after a sick person; this will be enough to catch the virus. Measles is dangerous, especially if it affects an adult. But children are also seriously ill: the temperature rises to 40.5 ° C, from the characteristic symptoms – inflammation of the mucous membranes in the mouth and upper respiratory tract, conjunctivitis and a pronounced maculopapular rash on the skin.
Measles is dangerous with complications of the central nervous system, respiratory system and gastrointestinal tract: laryngitis, croup (stenosis of the larynx), bronchitis, tracheitis, otitis media, sinusitis, primary measles pneumonia, measles encephalitis, hepatitis, lymphadenitis .
Especially serious complications develop in adult patients if they were not vaccinated in childhood.
How to protect yourself?
Immunization is the most effective measure to prevent measles.
What to do if someone around you gets sick?
In all regions, when a case of measles is detected, the epidemiological service necessarily carries out the so-called “cleaning immunization”: vaccinations are given to all contacts who have not had measles before and who were also vaccinated only once or not at all. they were vaccinated at all.
As the incidence of measles is increasing in many countries, including prosperous Europe, Rospotrebnadzor recommends that when planning a trip abroad, you get a measles vaccination at least two weeks before departure. “For vaccination, you should contact the medical organizations at the place of residence,” the ministry said in a statement.
