“Fortunately, the volume of collection of wild plants on the lands of the forest fund, that is, truly environmentally friendly products, grows year after year and if last year the increase was 14%, in 2021 it will be 48%. . In most cases, the increase ranges from 5% and the harvest is also affected by weather conditions: hot or cool summers and a growing trend in the consumption of healthy and environmentally friendly products, respectively, plus Entrepreneurs are beginning to consider this area to do business. In addition, now the state plans to make the industry more transparent and profitable for business: from September 1, the self-employed will be able to be included in the register of organic producers,” Pavel Chashchin, director of the Roslesinforg.Gazette.

According to him, most of the wild plants are collected and harvested in Siberia and the Far East – 17.1 thousand tons and 4.6 thousand tons, respectively, which is 98% of the total collection of wild plants last year.

“In total, in 2022, there were 400 lease agreements for harvesting forest resources for food and medicinal plants in 47 regions of the country, mostly in the Republic of Dagestan and Primorsky Krai,” Chashchin added.

Above all, the entrepreneurs harvest nuts, mainly pine nuts and hazelnuts, the department noted. Purchase volumes increased 16% last year, reaching 19.2 thousand tons. The main supplier is Siberia, which accounted for around 78% of all harvested walnuts. The leaders among the regions are the Tomsk region – 8.4 thousand tons, Primorsky Krai – 3.5 thousand tons and the Altai Republic – 2.9 thousand tons.

“At the same time, the Tomsk region is the traditional champion of the country in the collection of this resource, they harvest mainly pine nuts, from which they later make confectionery and cosmetics, as well as oils. The hazelnut harvest indicator in the region almost doubled last year,” he told Roslesinforge.

Also in the country last year, the volume of collection of wild mushrooms increased by 4.7% to 833.6 tons. Mainly white mushrooms and chanterelles. Harvest volume of berries and fruit fell sharply, by 60% to 22.5 tons, the department said.

Last year, fewer berries were harvested due to a decrease in export demand, buyers from Europe did not come, Alexander Deev, director of the Dikorosy association, told RG.

“Wholesale prices within Russia turned out to be much lower than usual. This stimulated an increase in domestic consumption. In 2023, we do not expect sharp increases in purchase prices for wild plants. Companies still need time to land good contracts for export, a season or two,” he said.

According to him, in the fall, the association sent inquiries to the trade missions of most friendly countries with a proposal to purchase pine nuts from Russian suppliers and processors. Several Middle Eastern companies are interested in the proposal, Deev said.

“There are entrepreneurs who have faced problems with the long-established export of wild plants, their business models have ‘floated’ and they are suffering temporary losses. Mushroom pickers suffered mainly, minus berry pickers, and the situation is stable. for pine nuts. Today, Russia’s own system is becoming an increasingly urgent issue of certifying wild plants as organic products,” believes the head of the association.

As Deev noted, now it is necessary to actively support mutual recognition of national standards for products made in Russia in friendly countries.

The head of Roslesinforg notes that this type of business in Russia has many prospects, because before, a large number of harvested wild plants were exported, and in the country everything remained mainly within the harvest region or its closest neighbors.

“Now more and more enterprises are being opened for processing wild plants into cosmetic products, dietary supplements and confectionery products. Many regions, for example, the Krasnoyarsk Territory, are already actively developing such a policy – state assistance is actively operating in the region for the creation, purchase and modernization of equipment for harvesting and processing wild fruits, berries, nuts and mushrooms, at the same time the products are sold in specialized stores in the region,” Chashchin said.
