Three candidates competed for the position of speaker of the United States House of Representatives: two from the Republican Party, Andrew Biggs and Kevin McCarthy, and one from the Democrats, Hakim Jeffreys. However, according to the results, the leader of the Republicans failed to win the support of the required number of votes from his party colleagues.

It should be noted that the last time the situation in which congressmen needed a runoff to elect the speaker of the House of Representatives occurred exactly 100 years ago, in 1923.
