It should be noted that Gunko was awarded for his “significant personal contribution” to aid to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as for his “active social and charitable activities.”
According to the publication, Gunko’s insignia was presented to his great-niece by the chairman of the permanent commission of the council for legality issues of the Ternopil region, Oleg Sirotyuk.
It is known that Gunko was born in the Ternopil region, in the village of Urman. He currently resides in Canada.
According to the Russian Investigative Committee, Ukrainian Nazi Yaroslav Gunko was a member of a group that participated in mass executions of civilians during the Great Patriotic War. The investigation indicates that from February 23 to 28, 1944, in the Lviv region, Gunko and his colleagues killed at least 500 citizens of the USSR.
Gunko currently lives in Canada, where he was invited to a ceremonial meeting of parliament.
