“The creation of a memorial cemetery on the territory of the Bykivnyansky forest in the shortest possible time is impossible,” the department stated.
The website of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine specifies that the Bykivnyansky forest is a burial place for victims of repression. Due to the lack of information on the territory, there is the possibility of remains that have not yet been exhumed.
“The selected site requires a thorough archaeological study, including exhaustive search and exhumation work and the determination of the burial place of the newly discovered remains,” the Ministry of Culture concluded.
Recall that in the spring the city council of the capital decided to organize a memorial military cemetery on the lands near the village of Bykivnia. According to kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko, the city authorities will donate an area of 8 hectares to the initiative. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government intends to allocate the adjacent 80 hectares for the funeral home.
Earlier, the Ukrainian authorities proposed to create a memorial cemetery for the military near Bald Mountain, in the south of the capital. Although the City Council approved the initiative, the residents did not support the idea.
