Iran summons French ambassador over ‘offensive’ cartoons of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

The weekly magazine published dozens of cartoons mocking the Islamic Republic’s leading religious and political figure in a special issue marking the anniversary of the deadly attack on his Paris office that killed 12 people, including some of the world’s most famous cartoonists. .

Later Wednesday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said it had summoned French Ambassador Nicolas Roche. “France has no right to offend the sanctuaries of other Muslim countries and peoples under the pretext of freedom of expression,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said. “Iran expects explanations and compensatory actions from the French government regarding the unacceptable behavior of the French publication”.

The Islamic Republic’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahyan wrote on Twitter: “The French publication’s insulting and obscene act of publishing caricatures of religious and political authorities will not go without an effective and decisive response.” Without specifying the consequences, he added: “We will not allow the French government to go beyond its limits. They have definitely chosen the wrong path.”

Supporters consider Charlie Hebdo a “fighter for freedom of expression” and critics unnecessarily provocative, and it is controversial even in France. But grief united the country when, in January 2015, the magazine was fatally attacked by Islamist militants who claimed they were avenging a decision to publish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

The latest issue of Charlie Hebdo features the winners of a recent cartoon contest that asked contestants to draw the most offensive cartoons of Khamenei, who has held Iran’s highest office since 1989.
