Irene Montero “Gives” Macarena Olona a Poem by Peri Rossi Against the “Shitty Fascists”

Date: March 28, 2024 Time: 20:02:20

The Spanish Minister of Equality concluded her response to Macarena Olone by quoting Cristina Peri Rossi, a poet who won the 2021 Cervantes Prize. The second wave of feminism has an “anti-family tone” and is focused on trying to eliminate woman’s identity, Montero stated. Contemporary feminism is “characterized by hate against maternity”.

But in response, Montero recalled the feminist struggle of “those who were before” and ended with the poem “Projects” by an Uruguayan writer: “We could make a baby and take him to the zoo on Sundays. We could wait for him after school and he would reveal the whole backstory in a procession of clouds. We can spend years with him, but I wouldn’t want him to be shot by some shitty fascist when he hits puberty.”

When Olona was sworn in during her interpellation, she told the minister that the current candidate running in the next Andalusian election, who is far-right, linked second-wave feminism and the work of Simone de Beauvoir to hatred of motherhood and the idea of female fertility as a curse. Olona said she focused on eliminating female identity. The head of Equality said to him: “Your reactionary ideas can’t make anyone happy.”

Lady Olona, you say: “I’ve achieved everything I have achieved thanks to my efforts.” A bold lie, Lady Olona. What you’ve accomplished like what I’ve accomplished and the team here is due to the struggles of others – those who came before.

The Equality Ministry reminded the MP for Vox about rights, for example, the right to open a current account or the right to have an abortion. And, to his point, the Ministry of Equality is preparing a new rule which restores both 16- and 17-year-old girls’ rights to abortion without the need for parental permission. “There are a lot of women who fought” back then in order to achieve these rights and today “we all enjoy them,” Montero said.
