American hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar has released a video for the song “Count Me Out.” It was directed by the rapper himself along with Dave Free. Lamar also worked as a producer.
The video begins with a psychotherapy session that Lamar attends. The psychotherapist was played by actress Helen Mirren (“Caligula”, “Catherine the Great” and “Consolation of Strangers”). He and Lamar exchange jokes, and in the background of their conversation are a series of shots of the rapper’s daily life, from hanging out with friends to signing contracts.
The video contains numerous references to religion. For example, Lamar appears as a messiah in the desert, surrounded by followers dressed in white. And at the end of the clip, an angel puts her hand on the rapper’s shoulder.
The song “Count Me Out” was featured on the Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers album, which was released in May of this year.
Previously, Kendrick Lamar teamed up with designer Martin Rose to work on a collaborative collection. The musician shared the sketches on his social networks. Judging by the moodboard, the inspiration for the collection was the style of the popular rappers of the 80s and 90s: 2PAC, The Compton Cowboys and Eazy-E.
