Almazbek Atambayev was released due to the decision of the Supreme Court, which decided to resume proceedings in the criminal case on the illegal release of one of the criminal figures due to newly discovered circumstances. The former president of Kyrgyzstan has spent the last three and a half years in prison, a third of this time in solitary confinement at a pre-trial detention center. The politician and his relatives affirm that the detention conditions undermined his health and an operation is required.
The day after his release, Almazbek Atambayev flew to Dubai (UAE), from where he then went to Spain. He explained the choice of a place for treatment with the great support given by the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez. The latter, according to the former president of the Kyrgyz Republic, at the head of the Socialist International – an organization that unites the social democratic parties of different countries – appealed to the Kyrgyz authorities with a request for the release of the politician.
– There was a personal invitation from the Prime Minister of Spain, – Almazbek Atambayev told reporters. -I know that he himself was involved in this issue, and his government of him. A lot of work was done by Luis Ayala when he was Secretary General of the Socialist International. He came to see me in jail. Of course, I am grateful and I think that I simply have to be treated in Spain.
The release, as Almazbek Atambayev emphasizes, would be impossible without the “correct attitude” towards him from the head of the republic Sadyr Japarov and the chairman of the State Committee for National Security Kamchybek Tashiev. In turn, in an interview with the Kabar news agency, the current president of the Kyrgyz Republic said that he respects the court’s decision. “We need to learn to live by the law,” he emphasized, adding Sadyr Japarov. “I don’t want even my enemy to be in prison. The Almighty said to the Prophet Muhammad: “I am always on the side of those who forgive and be patient.” We must be able to forgive.”
Almazbek Atambaev claims that he will return to his homeland as soon as he is treated and maintains his innocence.
