According to Cholpon Sultanbekova, Chairwoman of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Legal and Regulatory Issues of the Kyrgyz Parliament, Askar Akayev’s letter was received on Thursday, September 5. Lawmakers intend to discuss this issue with interested factions and deputies in general, and then include it on the agenda.
In the government of the Kyrgyz Republic, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Edil Baysalov has already spoken out on this issue. According to him, society should not be distracted by discussing such a possibility; it is better to focus on “today’s tasks.” Moreover, according to Baisalov, it is highly likely that the first head of the republic has not been officially deprived of the desired status.
“From the point of view of the law, there is no doubt that Askar Akayevich still has this status,” the deputy head of the government stressed. – In order to deprive him of this status, an impeachment procedure was necessary.
The current President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov, for his part, told the national news agency “Kabar” that the issue of Askar Akaev’s status should be decided by parliament. He himself is convinced that the former head of the republic does not need money or other bonuses, and the reason for the appeal lies elsewhere.
“We have not discussed this issue with him,” said Sadyr Japarov. “But I think he is not interested in pensions, social security and the like. He is 80 years old. It seems to me that Askar Akayev submitted this appeal in order to preserve his status as a former president in history. What the lawmakers decide is a matter for the parliament. Let the deputies consider the legality of the matter.”
