Labor hopes to close this Tuesday the increase in the minimum wage with CCOO and UGT

Date: March 29, 2024 Time: 18:38:42

The Secretary of State for Employment and Social Economy, Joaquín Pérez Rey, has expressed that he hoped to reach an agreement with the CCOO and UGT this Tuesday for the rise of the SMI before entering the meeting with the unions. The person in charge of Labor has also “deeply” regretted the absence of the CEOE, which he has branded as “irresponsible”.

“I believe that a measure that will affect millions of people cannot have an absent employer, it cannot have an employer that does not come to listen to what the Government has to say (…). It is irresponsible,” Pérez stressed. Rey before the meeting on the SMI that he presides over from 11:00 am at the headquarters of the ministry.

The ‘number two’ of Labor has asked the employers to “reflect” and return to the negotiating table because “it cannot ignore a figure that is decisive” for both workers and companies. “It is not acceptable that in one of the most important decisions in labor matters that is going to be made in 2023, the employers are not at the table. We are sorry and we want you to reflect ”, he insisted.

Pérez Rey has indicated that at the meeting on Tuesday the position of the unions will be listened to carefully and an attempt will be made to reach an agreement with them. “We trust that the Government and the unions and we hope that the employers can reach an agreement remotely,” he said.

Thus, the Secretary of State has confirmed that the Ministry of Labor is going to present a proposal to the unions at the meeting on Tuesday, trusting that this will be the last meeting, but not because it is an ultimatum, but because of the possibility that the maturity of the negotiation allows an agreement to be closed.

CCOO reproaches the CEOE for its absence

Also in statements prior to the SMI meeting, the CCOO’s confederal secretary for Trade Union Action, Mari Cruz Vicente, has criticized the absence of the CEOE and its “lack of responsibility”. “This shows that business organizations, at this juncture, seem to shy away from everything that involves increasing wages. To me and to my unions, it seems like a lack of responsibility,” she added.

Vicente arrived at the meeting with Labor this Tuesday with the intention of “closing the chapter of the SMI”, because this issue can no longer “give much more of itself”, he pointed out. The union leader has confirmed that the CCOO will approve an agreement if the government’s position falls within the union’s proposal to place the SMI between 1,082 euros and 1,100 euros per month.
