French brand Lacoste celebrates the 90th anniversary of the polo shirt with the launch of a collection on Wednesday featuring five reinvented pieces. WWD writes about it.
“In 1933, René Lacoste cut off the sleeves of his shirt, which went against the classic uniform that was being imposed on tennis players at that time. This simple gesture turned into a real revolution, thanks to which he received the title of inventor of the main wardrobe item – polo shirt, ”the brand said in a statement.
The new polo collection pays homage to the classic model, making it more modern with vibrant colors and graphic designs. Includes the L.12.12 polo shirt with a world map, the two-tone Paris polo shirt and the Movement polo shirt made of ecological pique fabric. Polo Tennis in jersey and without collar and the sporty Polo Golf are also presented.
Earlier, Lacoste appointed a new creative design director: Pelageya Kolotouros. In this role, she will oversee collaborations. The appointment follows the brand’s move toward a new creative approach that builds on collaborations both within the brand’s studio and with “the creative communities and collectives associated with Lacoste.”
