‘Like a horror movie’: Israel began bombing Lebanon after pagers and walkie-talkies exploded

After Lebanese Hezbollah was deprived of its means of communication by the massive explosion of pagers and walkie-talkies, the Israeli army launched airstrikes on Lebanese territory. Israel is preparing, in the words of Defense Minister Galant, for “a new phase of war,” hoping to wipe out Iran’s allies on its borders.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah has issued an appeal, calling the gadget sabotage unprecedented – in his words, genocide and a terrorist attack that “leads to a declaration of war.” Beirut and other Lebanese cities continue to suffer the consequences of technological sabotage by Israeli intelligence services.

Since September 18, thousands of pagers and radios have exploded in Lebanon, injuring and killing people.

Over the past two days, devices such as pagers and walkie-talkies have exploded across Lebanon. As a result, more than 30 people, including children, were killed and thousands were injured. Behind this attack was Israel, which had been preparing for this operation for years. Lebanese journalist Hassan Harfouch told what the bloody events look like from the inside.

Frightened by the explosions, residents of Lebanon are throwing away batteries en masse. Many people are afraid to use intercoms. The army and police in Beirut destroy suspicious devices by means of controlled detonations.

– The city is in panic. There are wild rumours that solar panels, refrigerators, anything can explode. Fake news is being spread that phones have exploded. I know it’s stupid, but I even told my parents to buy a fire extinguisher in case something explodes in the house, says Hassan Harfusha.

Thousands of people ended up in hospitals.

“We are all very scared, there are no safe places anywhere else.” In a hospital in Beirut I saw a man whose face was exposed due to the explosion. However, he remained conscious. Doctors told me that people’s faces and hands were the most affected. Many people lost their sight because they were carrying pagers in their hands at the time of the explosion…

What happened reminded Hassan of a scene from a horror movie: blood everywhere, people without eyes, someone with amputated limbs…

– Dr. Elias Warrack, an ophthalmologist at Mount Lebanon University Hospital in Beirut, said the past 24 hours have been a nightmare. More than 60-70% of patients have been left without at least one eye. The doctor I spoke to yesterday said he had performed 70 operations since the explosions began.
