Date: July 14, 2024 Time: 14:45:26

“The French citizen worked for an NGO created by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan,” the French president said in an interview with TF1 and France 2.

Macron added that the “necessary consular protection” will be provided to the detainee.

During the interview, the French leader separately stressed that the detainee “did not work for France.”

The Frenchman’s arrest became known the day before: several law enforcement officers took him out of the restaurant and took him to the Investigation Commission unit.

The Russian Investigative Committee reported that the man avoided providing information for inclusion in the register of foreign agents, and also deliberately collected military information about Russia, for which he held meetings in Moscow with citizens of the Russian Federation.

Russian media found out that the name of the detainee is Laurent Vinatier, he turned out to be an employee of the Swiss Center for Humanitarian Dialogue. As a consultant, he dealt with Eurasian issues after the coup in Ukraine in February 2014.

As TASS notes, the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under Part 3 of Art. 330.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – “Evasion of duties provided for by the legislation of the Russian Federation regarding foreign agents”. The maximum penalty is up to five years in prison.
