In the summer of 2022, Julia Garner, best known for the Netflix series Inventing Anna, was cast in the lead role. The selection, which lasted several weeks, also included Florence Pugh, Alexa Demi, Odessa Young and Bebe Rexha.

Previously, Madonna became the main character in the February issue of the Italian version of Vanity Fair. The photographers Luigi Murenu and Yango Henzi were responsible for the shooting. The styling was in charge of the famous stylist Bee Akerlund.
