“They tried to tear down the statues in honor of Hugo Chavez and they succeeded,” said Maduro, whose speech was broadcast by VTV.
The President clarified that we are talking about the statue of Chavez, which was installed in the Plaza Bolivar-Chavez in the city of La Guaira (central state of La Guaira). He added that this type of action is typical of “color revolutions.”
Earlier, Venezuela’s National Electoral Council declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the presidential election. More than 51% of voters voted for him. Opposition leader Edmundo González came in second, with 44% of Venezuelans voting for him.
Several countries in the region have said they will not recognise the election results. Opposition protests and clashes with police have broken out in some cities across the country.
