Matvienko supported the proposal to suspend Russia’s participation in the OSCE PA – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Date: July 17, 2024 Time: 15:34:37

On Wednesday, at a meeting of the Federation Council, the first deputy chairman of the International Affairs Commission, Vladimir Dzhabarov, raised the issue. He recalled that the leadership of the OSCE PA constantly creates obstacles to the work of Russian parliamentarians, making it difficult to attend meetings and refusing to issue visas. According to the senator, members of both houses of the Russian parliament agree that in the current situation, Russia’s participation in the OSCE PA should be suspended. The corresponding decision can be made at the next meeting of the Federation Council on July 3, and the State Duma intends to adopt the same document.

“Colleagues, I would support you, let us give this instruction to the committee to work with colleagues from the State Duma and prepare such a decision on the suspension of our participation and, consequently, on the suspension of payments to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly by of the Russian Federation,” said Valentina Matvienko, responding to her colleague’s speech.

“We are very patient, we tried for a long time to explain to the OSCE PA the existing regulations, the existing rules according to which no one has the right to limit the participation of national delegations in the meetings of the OSCE PA, we tried to make them “We understand, but as we see, this organization has become completely biased, Ukrainian,” the head of the Federation Council noted.

He described it as absurd that the pan-European organization responsible for security on the continent excludes Russia from its work. Matvienko is confident that “with the departure of the Russian Federation only the OSCE will lose and the Parliamentary Assembly will lose.” At the bilateral level and on other platforms, Russia will continue to interact with its European partners, she added. “I hope that this temporary mental confusion, which sooner or later will pass, will lead us to understand that only with the participation of Russia can we speak of equal and indivisible security for each State and for European security in general,” she concluded.

Earlier during the meeting, the senators adopted a statement condemning the destructive attempts of the collective West to block the work of the Russian delegation in the OSCE PA. “The Federation Council strongly condemns the openly destructive attempts of the countries of the collective West to block the work of the Russian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA),” it says the “Russian” document. The senators proceed from the need to restore interaction through the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the Black Sea Parliamentary Assembly for Economic Cooperation, the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy in the position of strict compliance with the principles of equal rights of legislators, the refusal to create artificial obstacles in the work of parliamentary delegations.”

The declaration of the upper house was adopted in connection with the International Day of Parliamentarism, which is celebrated on June 30 at the initiative of Russia.
