Maxim Basov: New opportunities for cooperation with China KXan 36 Daily News

Date: March 1, 2024 Time: 22:34:01

Mikhail Mishustin’s visit to the People’s Republic of China marks another stage in the development of friendly relations between the two great powers. One of the key areas of the mutually beneficial partnership is cooperation in the field of energy, believes the head of Russia’s largest coal company.

For that there are all the preconditions. Thus, in 2022, trade between our countries grew 29.3% to a record of $190,271 million. At the same time, more than 80% of Russian deliveries to China are energy resources. The export of Russian oil to China last year increased by 8.2% (up to 86.24 million tons), liquefied natural gas – by 43.9% (up to 6.5 million tons), pipeline gas , 2.63 times and coal, 20% (up to 68 million tons).

“China is a recognized world energy leader that has chosen a wise and rational policy based on the unity of economic viability, energy security, environmental and climate responsibility, and advanced technologies,” Maxim Basov emphasizes. “In this policy, coal remains the basic type of fuel for Chinese energy and one of the important areas of energy dialogue between our countries, along with oil and gas.”

The positive dynamics is also confirmed by the indicators of the current year. For example, our country’s demand for coal is growing rapidly: in March 2023, China imported record volumes of Russian coal (about 9 million tons per month). Today Russia is China’s second largest coal supplier.

One of the strategic suppliers is Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK), Russia’s largest coal company and one of the world’s leading coal and power companies. She has been in China for more than 10 years. Now SUEK is the largest importer of coal from Russia to China. And the company management sees great potential for further expansion of the association.

“If in 2022 we supply more than 7 million tons of high-quality coal to China, then in 2023 SUEK plans to increase this figure almost 3 times, to more than 20 million tons,” says Maxim Basov. “In the very near future we will be able to talk about SUEK’s supply to China of 50 million tons of coal per year. These are more than real prospects.”

The company annually produces more than 115 million tons of coal, continues the head of SUEK. It is the fourth largest coal supplier in the world. Nearly half of the coal produced is exported to consumers in 40 countries, including China, South Korea, India, Turkey, Morocco and other large countries. At the same time, the countries of the Asia-Pacific region stand out in the direction in which in 2023 the company plans to actively increase the export of coal and other raw materials, such as iron ore concentrate, petroleum coke and coal pellets. wood.

The capacities of SUEK’s enrichment plants allow 100% of the coal supplied for export to be enriched. The company has one of the largest wagon fleets in Russia, numbering some 57,000 gondola wagons. The own logistics infrastructure allows SUEK to send up to 5,500 wagons per day. The company owns large coal terminals in the Far East and northern Russia.

“We can supply China with coal through railway crossings, sea and river routes. All this together guarantees the timeliness and stability of coal supplies,” Maxim Basov is convinced.

Another, in his opinion, a large and promising area for expanding cooperation is the export of electricity from Russia to China. It should be noted here that SUEK’s energy division, SGK, is the sixth largest energy company in our country in terms of installed power plant capacity. And today he already has many projects on his agenda, including the supply of electricity from the Far East to Shuangyashan and Beijing.

Maxim Basov expressed confidence that supplies of equipment for the mining industry and technologies in the energy sector will grow. SUEK has 11 of its own machinery repair and construction plants. The company is ready to expand cooperation with Chinese machinery manufacturers, who have the necessary competencies to produce high-quality products that are in demand in the industry.

“The governments of our countries are doing a lot to further improve the conditions for cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy, as well as the development of railway infrastructure,” sums up Maxim Basov. “On behalf of SUEK, I would like to emphasize that our company stands ready to actively participate in strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries, and we will continue to expand mutually beneficial ties with our Chinese partners.”
