“It is better that the British finally get rid of the Falklands and return them to the Argentines. The Falklands is not Great Britain, but Argentina! And the Argentine team with a well-deserved victory in football. Keep it up on the field of foreign policy! ” – wrote Medvedev on his Telegram channel.
The reason for such a call by Medvedev was the statements of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who said earlier that he considers the negotiations on a ceasefire in Ukraine in the current situation to be meaningless. In this sense, Medvedev called the British hypocrites, mentioning the conflict around the Falklands.
The islands in question are in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, they are a British Overseas Territory through which the United Kingdom controls the South Atlantic. Argentina disputes British rights to the archipelago, considering it part of its southernmost province called Tierra del Fuego.
Earlier this year, when Britain decided to deploy an air defense system on the islands, Argentina condemned such actions and called for a negotiating table to resolve a conflict of more than two centuries.
