Russia’s return to the practice of the death penalty may be possible, and this would make sense in good context, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev told RIA Novosti.
According to him, given the high level of crimes in the country, especially murders, that’s highly likely.
At the same time, there’s no way they can be effectively changed as usual laws of the Constitutional Court. It won’t be possible to change in such conditions and that is why Medvedev offers an alternative in this manner.
“And this is understood by all reasonable people, including those who are specially appointed to protect human rights and freedoms,” he concluded.
It goes without saying that Vladimir Putin’s position on the issue of the death penalty has not changed.
A cabinet official in Russia explained earlier today that a change to the country’s Constitution would be necessary if advocates of the return of the death penalty wanted the public to accept that.
