After the first victory of his career at the tournament on clay – “Masters” in Rome, Daniil Medvedev admitted that he began to hate playing on this surface a little less. And he was clearly prepared for the start of Roland Garros.
On Tuesday, Medvedev met little-known Brazilian Thiago Wild, who is ranked 172 in the Association of Professional Tennis Players ranking.
Already in the first game, the Brazilian showed that he was not going to give up without a fight. They recovered from the score 0:2 and managed to triumph in the tiebreaker – 7:6 (7/5). In the second installment, an extra game was also needed, but this time luck turned to Medvedev – 7:6 (8/6).
The third game won by the Russian with a score of 6:2 showed that Medvedev was able to improve the game and find weaknesses in the opponent.
But this impression turned out to be misleading. Wild quickly took the lead in the fourth set 3:0, then practically allowed Medvedev to recover, but with the score 3:2 he again won someone else’s serve and equalized the score in sets – 6:3.
On this wave, the Brazilian actively started the decisive game, won the service of the Russian, but Medvedev still managed to recover. Wild, with a score of 3:3, returned to win two games in a row, which was the decisive moment of the match. Medvedev closed the gap with his serve, but the Brazilian took his at the decisive moment: 6: 4.
One of the reasons for Medvedev’s defeat can be called an unsuccessful game on his field. The Russian committed 15 double faults.
