The decision was made after discussions with Memphis community leaders and other officials, the city’s police department said in a statement, reports NBC News. According to the statement, the officers currently assigned to the unit wholeheartedly agree with this decision.

The news comes a day after authorities released video footage showing five former Memphis police officers brutally punching and kicking Nichols for several minutes after chasing his car. Nichols, 29, died three days later without regaining consciousness.

The five officers were members of the Scorpion Unit, which was created in November 2021 when the city’s homicide rate skyrocketed and the population called for action. The Memphis unit consisted of four groups of officers whose main task, according to the police department, was to reduce violent crime throughout the city. Mayor Jim Strickland mentioned the unit in his January 2022 speech on the state of crime in the city, promoting it. The mayor said that in the first three months of operation of the unit, more than 566 arrests were made, more than $103,000 in cash was seized, and 253 weapons were seized.

Five African-American officers involved in the fatal arrest have been fired by the police department and charged with second-degree murder.
