More than 5 cases of aggression throughout the entire working life of nursing staff

Eight out of ten nurses in our country have been attacked while doing their nursing work in a medical or social health center. The figures are similar to those obtained for the Madrid nurses, of whom almost half have been nurses up to five times, and almost 30% indicate that they have been nurses more than 6 times.

This follows from a macro survey conducted nurses unionSATSE, a total of 7,359 nurses from all Autonomous Communities other than Ceuta and Melilla, to make an updated “x-ray” of the serious problem of health violence that is affecting the state as a whole. .

In particular, 81.84% of the Madrid nurses surveyed by SATSE have been subjected to some type of aggression during their lives, whether it be physical (shocks, involuntary restraints, hits…) or verbal (threats, harassment, insults…) . or relatives.

Over the past two years, 65% of nurses in Madrid report experiencing some form of abuse from patients or relatives.

The highest percentage of nurses who have been assaulted is in the emergency and emergency services, as nationally up to 88.08% percent of professionals working in this field of care claim to have been the victim of one or more situations of violence against them.

Of the nurses attacked in Madrid, 46.87% were attacked up to 5 times (48.44% nationally); 23.50% one time (25.21% according to the state); 12.68%, 6 to 10 times (similar to the rest of the state) and nearly 17% over 10 times compared to 14.29% nationally.

In the case of professionals who are now unemployed but who worked a few months ago due to the health crisis caused by Covid-19 and who are usually the youngest, the percentage increases to 63.16% nationally in the case of those who were victims of violence up to five times.

In particular, over the past two years marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, 67.30% of nurses in our country have experienced some form of aggression. A percentage that also rises to 89.47 percent in the case of now unemployed professionals who were hired temporarily to deal with a severe health crisis.

Similarly, nursing professionals believe that the work environment in medical and social health centers and relationships with patients worse in the last two yearsand this was stated by 76% of the nurses surveyed (74.39% in the case of professionals from Madrid).

When asked about the type of aggression suffered, and taking into account the fact that one type of aggression does not exclude another and that the same person may suffer from different types of aggression even within the framework of the same act of violence, it turns out that mainly in the Community of Madrid insults (78.96%) and threats (75.04%) are the most common forms of aggression, followed by harassment (33.38%). With regard to physical aggression, 16.84% of those surveyed in Madrid suffered from it. The data, in general, are similar to the state data.

They are all very serious and alarming figures, concludes SATSE, which should force all public administrations and private medical companies to act together, coordinated and effectively, with reference to the State Law that is fighting this serious scourge that particularly affects the group. nurses and nurses for their increasingly close relationship with the patient and family.
