New Year’s holidays are made for sleeping and eating, and also for drunken movie marathons with everything that came out last year. We collect releases featuring cool costumes and other fashion documentary.

The new film with Cate Blanchett is worth watching, if only for the images of the main character, the first female conductor of the Berlin Orchestra. Blanchett herself chose the looks, along with costume designer Bina Daigeler, who had previously worked together on the miniseries Mrs. America. Director Lydia is wearing a coat from The Row, which took up most of the wardrobe budget, and a Birkin. Yohji Yamamoto and Celine’s old shoes and shirts can be seen on other heroines – find them in the frame for yourself.

Gucci, Valentino, Emilio Pucci, Versace and Bottega Veneta – already in the first episode of the second season of White Lotus, a dozen items from Italian brands will flash in the frame. Well, what, the action of Mike White’s satirical series takes place in Sicily, and there are not many places in the world where colorful things in the spirit of Pucci and Dolce & Gabbana look so organic. It will be even more interesting below: a swimsuit from Loewe, a vintage suit from Moschino, hats from Ruslan Baginsky, men’s silk shirts from Casablanca. Pay attention, and we haven’t said anything about the plot yet…

Tim Burton’s superpowered dark girls series has become the third most-watched series in Netflix history, and Wednesday’s dance has gone viral on TikTok. By the way, Jenna Ortega’s heroine dances in an Alaïa chiffon dress. Granted, she didn’t choose it herself: the Thing, a mysterious member of the Addams Family who is the right-hand man, picked up the image of the girl at the school dance. The central theme of the penultimate season of The Crown is the divorce of Carlos and Princess Diana. Costume designer Amy Roberts reproduced Diana’s iconic looks almost verbatim: vacation wardrobe, colorful outfits, and the famous “revenge dress”, aka “f**k dress”, in which the princess went to a party the night in which the noisy interview with Charles, in which he admitted the betrayal. Some facts about Giulia Piersanti, costume designer for Luca Guadagnino’s road movie about young cannibals. Julia has previously worked with the director on costumes for The Big Splash, Call Me By Your Name and the new version of Suspiria. She combines all this with work in fashion houses: 5 years at Lanvin with Alber Elbaz, a bit at Balenciaga, and for the last five years she has been responsible for knitwear at Celine. And Guadagnino’s next film, “Challengers” with Zendaya, due out in 2023, will see another designer, Jonathan Anderson, try his hand at costume designing for the first time.

Andrew Dominik’s nearly three-hour Netflix film centers on how Norma Jean, aka Marilyn Monroe, becomes a Hollywood star. And also: how childhood trauma affects an already mature person. The role of the diva was in charge of Ana de Armas, and Jennifer Johnson, who previously worked in the wardrobe of Tonya Contra Todos, is responsible for the images of the blonde. The team recreated Monroe’s gowns from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Niagara, and, well, nowhere without that same dress billowing in the wind from the subway grate.

Elvis is Baz Luhrmann’s first work since The Great Gatsby, which came out almost ten years ago. The new film traces Presley’s childhood, difficult years in which he was already the favorite of the public, and his meeting with his wife Priscilla. The costumes for the film were in charge of Katherine Martin, Luhrmann’s wife, who received an Oscar for her work on Gatsby. In total, Elvis, played by Austin Butler, will change about 90 images in the frame. Shoes for him were made by Manolo Blahnik, and the outfits of the musician’s wife were assembled in the Prada studio; the film crew received some tips on the heroine’s wardrobe personally from Priscilla Presley.

The series, directed by Olivier Assayas, is based on his 1996 feature film. In the new version, Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière worked on the costumes, with whom actress Alicia Vikander, who plays the title role, has been collaborating for the past seven years. Irma’s famous jumpsuit is now made of shiny black velvet. Read more about Ghesquière’s work here.

Briefly about the plot: the heroes of Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas are shooting a festival film commissioned by the oligarch. The film makes fun of auteur cinema, as well as narcissistic directors and actors. The images of Cruz in the painting are the most interesting to look at: a large couffant, total bows from Chanel by Virginie Viard, jumpsuits and things from iridescent fabrics in the spirit of the eighties.

Recently, Salvatore Ferragamo, with the arrival of creative director Maximilian Davis, dropped the founder’s name from the name; now it’s just Ferragamo. But in the fall a film about Salvatore Ferragamo was released. It was directed by Italian fashion darling Luca Guadagnino, director of The Big Splash and Call Me by Your Name, and written by fashion journalist Dana Thomas. Much of the film is based on Ferragamo’s biography of the same name, plus the team spoke with people close to the designer, including his wife Wanda, as well as fashion professionals Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Stefano Tonchi, Grace Coddington, Suzy Menkes.
