As explained in the regional department of environmental protection and nature management, on December 23 the fact of mass hunting of elk in the hunting area near the village of Popadino in the Tutaevsky district was revealed.
“It has been established that a collective hunt for elk was carried out, the responsibility of which was the chairman of the Tutaevsky regional society of hunters and fishermen,” said Vladimir Safonov, head of the department for the protection and use of wildlife of the said department.
The hunters’ prey was 20 elk, but no permit was issued to kill eight of them. According to the police, the 73-year-old president of the county branch of the hunting society organized the shooting of “extra” animals, using his official position. The damage caused to the state amounted to 640 thousand rubles.
– Animal carcasses were found not far from the place of illegal shooting. It was established that the suspect issued 12 special hunting permits, but in fact, 20 moose were killed, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Yaroslavl region explained.
A criminal case was initiated against the chairman of the Tutaev branch of the society of hunters and fishermen under part 2 of article 258 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal hunting using the official position and causing particularly large damage). The court placed the man under house arrest for 30 days.
The Yaroslavl region prosecutor’s office clarified that he faces a fine of five hundred thousand to one million rubles, or in the amount of three to five years’ salary, or imprisonment for a period of three to five years.
