Nebenzya called the UN Security Council meeting on the Middle East a parade of hypocrisy – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Date: July 18, 2024 Time: 04:01:51

Immediate UN condemnation of Iran’s actions

Moscow drew attention to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’s quick condemnation of Iran’s retaliatory attack. Nebenzya regretted that the Secretary-General did not volunteer to hold a briefing at the April 2 meeting, when Russia initiated the meeting after Israeli forces attacked the diplomatic corps in Damascus. The Russian Federation called on the Security Council to pay attention not only to “turbulent events in the Middle East, but also to Israeli attacks on neighboring Syria and Lebanon, which have become regular.”

Russia’s signal was ignored

The Russian delegation warned of the need for a single, strong signal from the Security Council about the inadmissibility of such actions not only in the Middle East, but anywhere in the world. “We even proposed a corresponding draft statement for the press, which was drawn up on the basis of standard depoliticized formulations for such cases. In response from Western delegations, we hear that, they say, not everything is so obvious to them and to us. It still needs to be weighed,” Nebenzya said.

The United States, Great Britain and France refused to confirm the unity and equality of the basic principles of international law on the inviolability of diplomatic objects. “You understand perfectly well that an attack on a diplomatic mission is a casus belli under international law,” Nebenzya stressed. She expressed confidence that if Western missions were attacked, retaliatory measures would not be long in coming.

Parade of hypocrisy and double standards

When it comes to the rights of non-Western countries, including the right to self-defense, “the favorite argument of lack of information, legal casuistry,” is used. Today, in the UN Security Council, “a parade of hypocrisy and double standards has developed, which is even uncomfortable to observe,” Nebenzya emphasized.

The escalation of the conflict in the region is due to the unstable nature of numerous crises, mainly the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Unilateral provocations will only increase tension in the region.

Nebenzya described what happened on the night of April 14 as a response to the shameful inaction of the UN Security Council. The outbreak of escalation occurs in the context of the West Jerusalem operation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank of the Jordan River, which has lasted more than six months, said Russia’s Permanent Representative to the world organization. Russia considers it unacceptable to silence the root causes, given the escalation of the situation around Iran by the United States and its partners.

Mutual attacks and violence create a vicious circle

Russia hopes that Middle Eastern countries will end the bloodshed, stop trading blows and resolve problems exclusively through political and diplomatic means. In this regard, constructive international actors should play a special role. “We must stop the spiral of confrontation,” Nebenzya said. The international community must make every effort to reduce the crisis. “Otherwise, the region will be drawn into a vicious cycle of mutual attacks and violence,” she added. Tehran’s signal about its reluctance to hostilities and further escalation must be heard. Israel should follow this example and abandon provocations that could lead to a conflict in the entire region, the Russian diplomat concluded.
