New aid of 5,760 euros for the children of victims of sexist violence

Date: July 14, 2024 Time: 14:03:21

The Basque Government Council, at the proposal of the Department of Equality, Justice and Social Policies, has approved a decree that establishes annual financial aid for the children of women murdered by sexist violence in the Basque Country since 2003.

The objective of this measure, according to the autonomous government, is to alleviate the damage caused and offer additional support to the children of the fatal victims, who are now in a situation of special vulnerability. Among the beneficiaries will be, among others, the children of Lourdes, murdered in Orio (Gipuzkoa) in 2023, those of Maialen, murdered in Vitoria during the same year, and those of Marijose, who died in Vitoria in 2018.

The financial aid will be annual and will extend until the beneficiaries reach the age of majority or, in certain cases, until the age of 25: when they are pursuing regulated studies, are dependent or have a disability equal to or greater than 33% recognized before reaching the s 18 years.

Features of the benefit and assignment

The annual amount will be equivalent to 80% of the 12-month Multiple Effect Public Income Indicator (Iprem), which is currently 5,760 euros. In cases of disability or dependency the amount will be doubled, reaching up to 11,520 euros.

To apply for this aid, potential beneficiaries must have been minors when their mother’s murder occurred and must not have turned 21 when they requested it. In addition, it is necessary to reside and appear on the register of a municipality in the Basque Country when applying for it and continuously while receiving the aid.

retroactive measure

The new regulations also include a single retroactive payment of 10,000 euros for those people who, having been orphaned by sexist violence since 2003, were minors at the time of the murder. They will have two years to request this aid, from the approval of the decree.
