New York City Mayor Eric Adams has taken the initiative to convert some of the office space into residential apartments.

According to the mayor, this approach will help solve two problems at once. First, the conversion of commercial real estate to residential will solve the problem of losses suffered by building owners. After the pandemic and the transfer of many employees to remote work, most offices have not returned to normal operation. This has led business owners to rent much smaller premises that are moving out of commercial buildings. On the other hand, the cost of renting housing in large US cities continues to increase in price due to its scarcity and slowdown in construction in the context of economic difficulties in the last year.

Adams’ proposal is now being considered by experts at the mayor’s office, and the architects believe that almost all of the offices could be divided into multiple apartments.

True, so far no one undertakes to predict how long it will take to re-equip and re-register the premises, and how all this will affect the cost of rent in the city.
