As indicated in the department’s statement, diplomats from these states must leave Niger within 48 hours.
Before that, the French ambassador in Niamey received a similar request. The authorities of the African country explained that they were forced to take such a step by the actions of the French government, which is contrary to the interests of Niger.
Let us remember that the coup in Niger took place on July 26. Then the presidential guard under the leadership of General Omar Chiani blocked the palace of the head of state Mohamed Bazum, announcing his overthrow.
The leaders of most Western countries, as well as members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), condemned the coup. Information has appeared in the media that preparations have begun at the military airfields of the ECOWAS countries for a possible military invasion of Niger. In this context, the military that took power in the country announced the recruitment of volunteers.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that the ECOWAS invasion of Niger would not bring any benefit, but would, on the contrary, be disastrous for thousands of people.
