Sportswear brands Nike and Puma have stopped using kangaroo leather for football boots. Hypebeast writes about it.
Puma was the first to announce the news, followed by Nike two weeks later. The company has abandoned its only supplier of kangaroo leather and will replace the material with synthetic material starting this year.
In early 2023, Oregon passed a bill banning the sale of kangaroo-based products. Since Nike’s Beaverton headquarters is in that state, the law could have played a role in the decision.
Kangaroo leather is a common material for football boots and is featured in lines like the Nike Tiempo 9 Elite, adidas Predator Pulse, and Puma KING. With sports giants like Nike and Puma now favoring alternative materials, the implications for the industry will be huge as other companies are likely to follow suit.
Previously, Burberry introduced a new series of Burberry Landscapes environmental art projects. As part of the initiative, the brand places a branded cage over various natural objects. This time the print appeared on the island of Hierro in the Canary Islands and in South Africa, the Western Cape.
