As previously reported, on February 17 at 23:16 Moscow time, Roshydromet specialists recorded in the X-ray range a solar flare of the highest class – X2.3 / 2B. According to his own report, this activity lasted for more than an hour (72 minutes), “accompanied by a burst of spectral type II radio emission and a coronal mass ejection.”
On Earth, scientists predict, this will cause a noticeable disturbance of the geomagnetic field again on February 20 and in the days that follow.
The Solar X-ray Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, as well as the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences give a similar forecast.
The increase in the activity of the Sun -several eruptions of class C- was noticed at the end of the last and in the first days of this year. And they even call such an increase in solar activity the strongest since 2017.
And magnetic storms that reach Earth (specialists prefer to speak of “geomagnetic field disturbance”) can cause navigation instruments to malfunction, shortwave communications, and even disrupt the regular operation of large power systems. .
