NYT: kyiv’s plan to return to 1991 borders is far from reality – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Date: July 18, 2024 Time: 05:39:45

The article says that many experts are skeptical that kyiv can regain control over Donbass and Crimea by military means, especially after last year’s failed counteroffensive.

The NYT writes that Ukraine will become smaller, but will be able to retain most of its territory and integrate economically and strategically into Europe.

Let us remember that the return to the borders that existed at the time of the collapse of the USSR in 1991 was an obligatory condition for the negotiations in kyiv. It was part of the so-called “Zelensky formula.”

In late March, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for the first time allowed negotiations with Russia before reaching the 1991 borders.

The Kremlin stressed that kyiv must take into account in the negotiations the new geopolitical reality and the change of borders between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
