“The Sakhalin Interdistrict Environmental Prosecutor’s Office, in cooperation with the Okha City Prosecutor’s Office and with the participation of regulatory authorities, organized an audit, during which compliance with wildlife legislation will be assessed, the integrity of measures taken for the preservation of especially valuable animal species listed in the Red Book of Sakhalin and the Russian Federation,” the statement said.
The day before, a video appeared on social networks about the mass slaughter of reindeer in the north of Sakhalin in the area of the headwaters of the Duna River, 7-8 kilometers from the coast. According to a person who filmed and commented behind the scenes on the aftermath of the carnage, judging by the remains of the animals, unknown persons killed 25 people. They killed the entire herd, including 13 females with fry. The reindeer were not driven on Buran snowmobiles, but on other vehicles with wide tracks.
“Wherever one goes, there is blood everywhere. The mari were beaten. They were shamelessly taken out,” said an eyewitness.
“If there are grounds, comprehensive measures of the prosecutor’s response will be taken. The Okha city prosecutor’s office has taken control of the progress and results of the procedural verification,” the regional prosecutor’s office said.
