“Only one of them could have escaped”: scientists proved that the death of the hero Leonardo DiCaprio in “Titanic” was inevitable

For 25 years, Titanic fans have tried to prove that a raft door would hold room for both.

December 19 marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the legendary film Titanic, and on February 14 of next year, Titanic will be shot again (unfortunately, not in Russia) in 4K quality. In this regard, director James Cameron is now giving a lot of interviews. And in one of them he said that he ordered a special scientific study to answer the question that has plagued viewers for a quarter of a century: could Leonardo DiCaprio’s hero Jack Dawson in the Titanic finale be saved?

Remember that in this scene, Rose (Kate Winslet) is sitting in the ocean on a gate that has been turned into a makeshift raft. Jack is in the icy water next to her. In the end, she dies of hypothermia and sinks to the bottom. For 25 years, Titanic fans have tried to prove that a raft door would have room for both.

Now, Cameron told the Toronto Sun: “We did a scientific study to put an end to all these ideas, to drive a stake through the heart of it all. He did some serious forensics with a hypothermia specialist, made a copy of the raft from the movie. And they filmed a short film that will be released in February.”

Oh explained: “We took two stuntmen with the exact same body weight as Kate and Leo, we put sensors on them, they even had sensors inside. Put them in ice cold water and see if any of the characters could survive. Many different methods have been used. The response was that there was no way both characters could have escaped. Only one could survive.”

Cameron added: “Jack needed to die. It’s like Romeo and Juliet. This is a movie about love, personal sacrifice and mortality. Love is measured by self-sacrifice… Maybe 25 years later, I can finally get rid of all this!”

“All This” is the fans’ never-ending dreams of Jack getting on the raft and escaping. For a quarter of a century, they have brought Cameron to extreme discomfort; he calls them “idiots”. As the Toronto Sun recalls, in 2019 he said in an interview with the BBC: “There is nothing to discuss. But if you really want to dig into this idiotic argument… Well look, could Romeo be smarter and not drink poison? Yes. Couldn’t he carry a dagger with him so Juliet wouldn’t stab herself for an hour? Yes, sure. But everything is irrelevant [пьесы Шекспира]”.

Questions about whether Jack could have escaped periodically plague the actors. Leonardo DiCaprio declined to comment, while Kate Winslet said in 2016 that she thought Jack would fit on a raft and survive.
